Mainers for Cynthia McKinney

Report from Mainers for Cynthia McKinney 6/15/2008

We had a meeting today in Harpswell at the home of Jane Meisenbach and received a phone call from Cynthia McKinney who was in Seattle preparing to speak to a group of young people. Cynthia reported that her campaign for the Green Party presidential nomination is going well and that she has recently visited 24 states.

One major task for the campaign is to now gather $5,000 in donations from 20 states so that she can qualify for federal matching funds. There is a deadline of July 1 for this to happen. So far seven states have hit that mark. Maine has now donated just over $2,000 and we are asking all Cynthia supporters to immediately make a donation of any size you can to help Maine reach the $5,000 level. You can donate directly to Cynthia's important campaign on-line at http://supporters.runcynthiarun.org/supporters.cgi or you can mail it to: The Power to the People Committee, Cynthia McKinney for President, P. O. Box 311759, Atlanta, GA 31131-1759

If 100 Mainers each give $30 than we hit the mark. If 50 of us donate $60 then we hit the $5,000. Please held us do this by donating today!

Cynthia talked to us via speaker phone today about how she is working hard to build bridges between Greens, with our 10 Key Values, and new movements like the Reconstruction Party - the people in New Orleans who were left stranded in the deep water and devastating aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Cynthia is still fighting for the poor people of this region who are without jobs, housing, health care and more. Cynthia astutely stated that in order for us to develop an effective movement across the nation that we must bring progressive whites and disaffected people of color together around a common agenda that includes:
  • Livable wages and full employment
  • Single payer health care
  • Major cuts in military spending
  • Ending the occupation of Iraq
  • Eliminating the drug war directed at poor people
  • Affordable housing
  • Dealing with the mounting prison culture
  • Developing sustainable "Green" technologies
  • And much more
Cynthia went on to say that "many people will be tricked by the Democratic party promises of 'hope and change' and that the growing yearning for change among the people provides the Green Party with the opportunity to bring real substance to the national campaign."

But Cynthia said, "We've got to raise enough money to get that message out so that people will know we are offering real solutions."

She spoke about how badly Rep. Dennis Kucinich had been ignored by his own party this past week when he introduced 35 thoughtful and detailed articles of impeachment against President Bush and said she was working harder than ever to reach out to impeachment supporters across the country.

The next meeting of Mainers for Cynthia McKinney will be held on Saturday, July 19 in Portland at noon in the basement of O'Naturals on Exchange Street. All are invited to attend.
